One World Market (North Suburbs)

One World Market (no website)      8466 Castleton Corner       317-842-3442

One World Market is a Japanese grocery store with an amazing lunch/dinner counter located in a strip mall on the Northwest side of Indy.  Despite its unassuming ambiance, One World Market has the best sushi outside of the West Coast and Hawaii.  No joke.  And the prices are affordable.  You’ll find authentic sushi, tempura, udon, unagi, donkatsu, and Japanese curry—not always available in Japanese restaurants and nothing like Indian, Thai or Carribean curry.  Sushi tends to be straightforward, although there are a few contemporary maki like the dragon roll.  And because the grocery store part of One World Market has a small but outstanding selection of fresh fish, you can select something for sashimi (no extra charge) or to be grilled (for an extra $1).  Our favorites have been succulent pieces of salmon, toro, or octopus.  We’ve often seen fresh surf clams, scallops, squid, uni, and mackerel.  Everything looks so delicious and fresh that selections are difficult to make.

One World Market tends to be very popular, and it attracts large numbers of Japanese and other East Asian/Asian Americans looking for high quality, authentic Japanese food.  If you don’t want to wait for one of the limited number of seats (which are first come, first serve), then try an off-time, such as late afternoon before the dinner rush.  Or call ahead for take-out, but be aware that they close around 7:30 pm.  You’ll have plenty to browse in the store if you find yourself waiting.  But One World Market is worth the drive and the wait.
