IND

Indianapolis has a bit of an inferiority complex. Point your browser at any of these links to see all the ways Indy, Circle City, Naptown, and India-no-place fight its self-imposed jittery self-consciousness.
  • Do3017.com - Claims to list the most events in the city. Social networking utility.
  • Museums - IMA, State Museum, Eiteljorg, the Zoo and Children's Museums are the highlights.
  • Tourism site - Official events
  • TripAdvisor - Indianapolis city guide at our favorite travel site
  • Gay Indy - Support the city that supports its community.
  • 4C4E - CCCCs for Equality, or 4C4Equality, is a grassroots group promoting engagement on a range of LGBTQ issues including marriage equality.
There's a heck of a lot in Indy to see, to do, to enjoy. These pages are aimed at attendees at the 2014 ATTW and CCCC conferences. Below is a guide to the airport, and the navigation links are to neighborhoods in and around Indianapolis.

We highly recommend traveling through IND, Indianapolis International Airport. There are shuttles available right from the Airport to the conference hotels, the facility is brand new, gorgeous, and rarely experiences delays due to volume. Cincinnati & Louisville are 2 hours away, and Chicago is 3 hours. Find out more by following links below, including whether your favorite airline flies to IND.
The Official Guide has lots of great resources to get you acclimated to the city. We're going to give you our preferences, idiosyncratically. For those of you who know us and/or know our tastes, you know that we don't always like what everyone else likes. We don't care. Use this as you will. No guarantees, no promises, only access to our ten years of living an hour north of this city that has a lot more to offer than we expected.

Navigating IND

We like Indianapolis Airport. It's relatively stress-free. It's also the first major airport build after 9/11 and so all the sadly necessary security screening areas are designed into the public spaces. One compromise here, too, is that some of the restaurants are on one side of security while others are only accessible after security screening. There's a useful map available.

Before Security Screening

One of the better pizza places (Georgio's) is on your right as you enter (Michael's a New Yorker and is super picky about pizza -- he'll only touch pizza at four places in the state, 2 in Indy. This is one of them). On the left is a small version of Patachou, an Indianapolis original. It's the Patachou cafe, and they are famous for good breakfast foods including cinnamon toast, oatmeal, and omelets. It's a welcome respite from the regular greasy grind of overpriced airport food. And don't miss Artizan for tchotchkes and t-shirts as well as numerous items from museum shops from downtown -- frequent traveler tip: upon arrival, spend 10 minutes before heading down to claim your baggage and check for must-buy souvenirs like kids' t-shirts. Buy them right before departure.

After security:

Shapiro's is Indy's Deli. If you missed it during the conference, come have a pastrami, corned beef, or reuben before you take off. If you're hungry and in Terminal A, 96th Street Steakburgers is a fine local establishment.
